Richard is married to Belinda, a General Practitioner, parent of Tom (OGC School Captain 2017) and current students Will and Daisy. Belinda is an active member of the PSPA and the SSPA and Richard is current Convenor of the Carji Greeves Club, supporting school football. He has been a community volunteer as a Nippers leader at 13th Beach SLC and provided medical cover and assistant coaching at local club football. He remains active as a competitive Masters Rower nationally as a member of the Barwon Rowing Club.
Richard is an orthopaedic shoulder and upper limb surgeon living and working in Geelong, Victoria since 2003. He studied medicine at the University of Tasmania, completed basic surgical training in the Royal Australian Navy in Sydney and continues in the Active Reserve. His advanced orthopaedic training was in Victoria, including Geelong, with Fellowship training in trauma, shoulder, upper limb and hand surgery in the UK, Europe and the USA. He was appointed as the foundation St John of God and Barwon Health Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Deakin University in 2014. He is Director of Orthopaedics at Barwon Health and the Barwon Centre of Orthopaedic Research and Education (B-CORE). He sits on a number of clinical governance and medical advisory committees in Geelong, as well as national and international committees for the advancement and improvement of surgery.
