The Geelong College was thrilled with today’s outstanding VCE results. Joint Duxes of the College Bailey Gait and Remy Locke received ATARs of 99.50. Remy achieved a perfect study score of 50 for Physical Education in 2022, after receiving a study score of 50 for Psychology in 2021. She also studied Further Mathematics, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and hopes to study Science at Melbourne University next year. Bailey, who hopes to study Biomedical Science at Melbourne University, studied Legal Studies, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, English, French and Mathematical Methods.
Principal, Dr Peter Miller said. “Our 177 VCE students have done extremely well, not just in their studies which is what today is about, but in all the opportunities they have availed themselves of, particularly in the last year. I was thrilled to see our median ATAR at 82.55, and more than a quarter of our students achieve an ATAR over 90, which means they are ranked in the top 10% of the state. It was also particularly pleasing to see three students with scores over 99 or the top 1% of the state, and 5 perfect study scores.
We are so proud of what has been achieved by all of our Year 12 students over the past two years. With hard work, great endeavour, balance and courage they have achieved academic excellence. We are proud of all they have strived for and the people they have become. We wish them every success and happiness for the next steps on their learning journeys.
I would like to offer special congratulations to our Duxes Bailey Gait and Remy Locke, and our Proxime accessit, College Co-Captain Emmy Bowyer. All three girls have worked incredibly hard and been involved in the full gamut of opportunities the College offers, they leave school not only as some of the highest achievers in the state, but well-rounded and competent young people who I am sure will go on to great things. A special mention also those who achieved a perfect study score of 50 this year, Emmy Bowyer in English, Remy Locke in Physical Education, Poppy Hughes in Geography, Ellie Campbell in Studio Arts and Ryan Neagle in Further Maths” Dr Miller concluded.
Joint Dux of the College, Bailey Gait thrilled with her result. “I was so happy I cried a little bit, I’m not really sure why but it was overwhelming to think about all the work I put in, not just this year, but in the years leading up to it. My parents cried too, and even my siblings, we were a very happy household this morning.”
Bailey received The Fen and Roy Pillow Prize incorporating the A.K.H. Thompson Prize, a Year 12 Merit Award and Academic Merits for Chemistry, English, Further Mathematics and Mathematical Methods. She was Co-Captain of McLean House, Captain of Debating and 1st Soccer Captain, and was recognised with Honours for Academic Performance, Debating and Soccer. She is sure her broad outlook to her schooling helped her achieve academic excellence. “The only way I could have made it through VCE was by doing a range of things outside of just studying like playing sport and being involved in the community. My friends and family were also really important. You network is a reflection of you, and I couldn’t have done it without them.
I would also like to thank the College, it has shaped the person I have become, and I am very grateful for that.”
Bailey is hoping to study Biomedical Science at Melbourne University and then Dentistry and Orthodontics. “I’d like to go to London to do further study. My family are from there and I love it. I just think it would be great to go away and develop some independence and see people I haven’t seen for ages.”
Joint Dux of the College, Remy Locke was in hospital yesterday and recovering this morning when she received her results. “It felt surreal, I was shocked to see another 50 and then I saw my ATAR and the tears came. Mum was freaking out and my Grandma was on the phone crying, so it was a bit hectic, but really fun.”
Remy was awarded a Year 12 Merit Award, The Physical Education Prize, and Academic Merits for Chemistry, English, Further Mathematics, Physical Education and Psychology. She was Co-Captain of Wettenhall House and 1st Soccer Vice-Captain. Remy was recognised with Honours for Academic Performance and Soccer. She credits the support she received from her teachers as a big part of her success. “I loved my English teacher and am really grateful for the support she, and all my other teachers gave me over the past few years. I am pretty motivated, but you still need support and help. I also think the broad range of subjects I studied helped, Physical Education was so different to Chemistry, so I was doing different things which kept it interesting.”
With plans to study Science at Melbourne University next year, Remy is still deciding on what might come next. “I am hoping to study Science at Melbourne and live up there. After that I’m not sure. I am thinking that I will take the Honours in Veterinary Science pathway or at least that’s the plan for now.”
Proxime accessit was the College Co-Captain Emmy Bowyer with an ATAR of 99.40. Emmy achieved a study score of 50 for English and studied Physical Education, Biology, Chemistry, Latin and Mathematics Methods. She was awarded a Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, The C.A. Bickford Prize for the top Year 12 English Student, The E.H. Morrison Prize, The Principal’s Prize for the Captains of the School, a Year 12 Merit Award, and Academic Merits for Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematical Methods and Physical Education. In addition to her duties as Co-Captain, she was a Prefect in McArthur House and the 1st Tennis Captain. Emmy was recognised with Honours for Academic Performance, Choir, Stage Band and Tennis, and School Colours for Drama, Music and Supergroup.
Emmy was pleasantly surprised with her results this morning. “I am so grateful for all of the opportunities at the College that have been integral to my success. I feel like my score isn’t just a score but is a reflection on all I’ve been a part of over my time at College including sport, music and drama. I’m also very fortunate to have wonderful teachers, and my family have been incredibly supportive, not just this year, but always.
Emmy hopes to study Medicine next year at Monash. “I had my interview last week so it’s just another couple of weeks to wait to see if I get in. I want to study Medicine because it is the perfect balance between helping people face to face and accessing the huge amount of knowledge of science and medicine, which is something that has always fascinated me.”
