The Geelong College Recreation Centre’s Learn-to-Dive program offers lessons for beginner and developing divers from 8 years of age. Sessions are conducted by Diving Australia accredited coaches and recognised with an affiliation with diving Victoria.
Diving Sessions run between 4:00pm – 6:00pm Monday-Friday.
Students will work towards these competencies and should be able to consistenly perform them before progressing to the next level.
Bronze divers are beginner divers, 8yrs+, wishing to experience diving for the first time. We focus on developing the skills and confidence to take the diver from the pool edge to the 1m dive board. These children learn strong basics, body awareness and position during a fun 60 minute class. Aims: Develop and have fun learning the basic skills necessary to complete: • jumps in different positions • a front and back entry of 1m • a pike entry of 3m • unassisted back fall from 1m • a basic hurdle and to: • develop and improve body control and awareness in space • gain experience jumping and diving from 1m and 3m springboards Progression: When students master the basic skills students progress to the Silver squad Class Ratio: 1:7 Session Times: Monday: 4:00 - 5:00 pm Coach – George
Silver Squad is for divers who have some prior understanding of diving, aerial awareness and who are wishing to take on the demands, experiences and challenges that springboard diving has to offer. They will be developing a dive list which leads them into competitive diving. Aims: Develop and have fun learning the basic skills necessary to master: • a consistent hurdle • a forward dive pike of 1m • a back dive of 1m • a forward somersault of 1m • an inward dive tuck from 1m Progression: When students master the above, students will have the option to progress to a gold squad where a key focus will be based on refining dives for competition diving. Gold Squad is a development squad of divers selected from the Silver squad. Divers must be keen, strong, willing and committed to improving their dive list, while having the desire to compete. They are required to attend at least one session per week and building up to two sessions for divers who are preparing to compete at relevant school diving competitions, such as GSV, APS, SSV and Team VIC as well as Diving Vic Pennant events. Divers in Gold Squad have access to Diving Victoria resources with a discounted Diving Victoria Membership. Divers will be able to access select diving Victoria meets while training close to home and not relying on regular trips to Melbourne. Aims: • consistent forward 1 ½ utilising spotting techniques • forward dive from 3m • inward dive from 3m • back somersault • back somersault ½ twist Class Ratio: 1:6 Session times: Tuesday: 5:00 - 6:00pm Coach - Courtney Wednesday: 4:00pm - 5:00 pm Coach - Grace Friday: 5:00pm - 6:00 pm Coach – George
Social Gold Squad is a squad of divers selected from the Silver squad who are not interested in competing but are still keen on diving with friends. The Social Squad will help assist divers in preparation for the APS diving as well as maintain those fundamental skills from previous levels. The program runs for the school term. Divers will be challenged to take their diving off the 3m springboard. Aims: • develop and maintain skills with in a fun environment • developing skills for dives from all dive groups • developing the skills for dives from the 3m board • developing dives with different shapes Progression: Students who wish to take their diving to the next level can progress to the Gold Competition Squad.
